How to find the right battery model for your car: a step-by-step guide

Buying a car battery is easier when you know exactly which model your car needs. The information is printed on the battery itself, and finding it takes about five minutes. This guide shows you where to look, what the codes mean and how to confirm the fit with a shop before you spend anything. If you drive a car in Visakhapatnam and want help, you can also send us a photo of your battery label.

Step 1: Find the battery in your car

In most cars the battery sits in a tray in the engine bay, near one of the front corners. Some cars place it under the rear seat or in the boot instead, so check your owner's manual if you cannot see it under the bonnet. Switch the engine off, apply the handbrake and let the engine cool before you look.

Step 2: Read the label

Look for the sticker or embossed text on the top or side of the battery. It normally shows the brand, a model code, the voltage (12 V for cars), the capacity in Ah, often a cold-cranking figure (CCA), and a date or batch code. Take a clear photo in good light so you can zoom in later.

Our guide on how to read a car battery label explains the code in more detail.

Step 3: Check which side the positive terminal is on

Two batteries of the same size and capacity are not interchangeable if the positive terminal is on opposite sides, because the cables may not reach. Stand with the label facing you and note whether the red positive (+) terminal is on the left or right. Many model codes end in L or R to show this, but always match the exact code and your car's cable layout.

Step 4: Match the code to your car

Write down the model code, the Ah figure and the terminal side, then compare them with the references listed for your vehicle. On our site you can open the page for your car in battery by vehicle, use the battery finder, or browse the battery models by brand. Be aware that a listing may depend on the variant, the fuel type, the manufacturing year and whether the car has an idle start-stop system. Start-stop cars need a battery made for that duty, which we explain in start-stop car batteries explained.

Step 5: Confirm before you buy

Send the shop your car's make, model, year and fuel type together with the photo of the label. A good shop will tell you the matching model, whether it is in stock and when you can collect it. We do the same at Deepak Automobiles®: message us on WhatsApp or call, and we confirm the model, price and availability. We then deliver and fit it, or you collect it from the store. The store is open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Quick safety notes

  • Wear gloves and eye protection, and keep naked flames and sparks away from the battery.
  • If you disconnect the battery yourself, remove the negative (-) cable first and refit it last, and never let a metal tool touch both terminals.
  • Some modern cars need settings reset or a relearn procedure after a battery change, so ask before you start.
  • Keep your old battery for exchange questions and recycling, and keep the new invoice and warranty card together.

If the label is unreadable

Labels fade, get dirty or are covered by a heat shield. Wipe the label with a dry cloth. If you still cannot read it, tell us your car's details and we will check our listings, or look at the guide to choosing a battery shop in Visakhapatnam for what to ask any seller.
