CAR BATTERIES

Seven signs your car battery is about to fail

Car battery

A car battery rarely dies without warning. If you know what to look for, you can replace it on your own schedule rather than in a car park. These are the common signs.

1. Slow or labouring cranking

If the engine turns over more slowly than it used to, especially on cooler mornings, the battery may be losing capacity.

2. Dim headlights and a weak horn

Lights that dim when you start the car, or a horn that sounds weak, point to low stored energy.

3. Clicking and nothing else

A rapid clicking noise when you turn the key usually means there is not enough power to turn the starter.

4. Warning light on the dashboard

A battery or charging light can indicate a problem with the battery or the charging system. Because the alternator can also be at fault, get both checked.

5. Swelling, leaks or heavy corrosion

A bulging case, a smell of rotten eggs or crusty deposits around the terminals are signs of damage or overheating. Treat a swollen or leaking battery carefully and have it replaced.

6. Age

Many car batteries last roughly three to five years, depending on climate, driving pattern and how much electrical load the car carries. Heat is hard on batteries. If yours is well into that range and showing symptoms, replacement is likely close.

7. Frequent short trips

Short drives do not give the alternator time to recharge what the starter used. Over weeks, the battery stays partly discharged and ages faster.

Before you blame the battery

  • Check that the terminals are clean and tight.
  • Make sure nothing was left switched on overnight.
  • If the battery keeps going flat soon after charging, have the alternator and any parasitic drain checked.

A simple voltage reading with the engine off can help: a healthy, rested 12 V battery usually reads a little above 12.5 V, while a reading well below that suggests it is discharged or weak. A proper load test gives the clearest answer.
