BUYING GUIDE

How to check that a battery is fresh and genuine before you buy it

Amaron FLO car battery

A battery that has sat on a shelf for a long time, or one that is not what the sticker claims, can cost you far more than the saving on the price. These five checks take a few minutes at the counter.

1. Find the date code

Most brands mark the manufacturing month and year on the battery, either as a sticker or an embossed code. Ask the shop to show you where it is on this particular brand, and if you are unsure how to read it, check the brand's own guide. As a rule, fresher is better, because lead-acid batteries self-discharge in storage.

2. Match the serial number to the paperwork

The invoice and warranty card should carry the same serial number as the battery in front of you. Check this before you leave, not after something goes wrong.

3. Read the label properly

The model code, capacity (Ah), voltage and brand should be consistent and cleanly printed. Our guide to reading a car battery label covers what the numbers mean.

4. Look at the physical condition

Reject a battery with a cracked or bulging case, leaking fluid, damaged terminals or a missing vent cap. Corroded terminals on a "new" battery are a bad sign.

5. Ask about the voltage

A new, properly stored 12 V battery should read near its full charge, around 12.6 V or higher. Ask the shop to show you the reading. A low reading on a supposedly new unit suggests it has been sitting too long or has a problem.

Beware of deals that are too good

An unusually low price for a well-known brand can mean old stock, a refurbished unit or a copy. Buy from a dealer that deals with the brand and is willing to put the details on the invoice.
